Two ways to travel by water, with different questions to ask before choosing.
Start with the days you want
Would you rather build your trip around towns and cultural visits, or around island exploration and outdoor activities? Use that preference as your starting point, then inspect the daily program. Individual itineraries can differ considerably within each style.
Compare the experience ashore
For a river itinerary, look at guided visits, independent time and transport from the docking point. For an expedition-style itinerary, ask about landing procedures, small-boat outings and activity requirements. Neither category should be assumed to suit every traveler without checking the details.
Think about time onboard
Review the spaces where you would spend time between visits. Cabin layout, shared decks and indoor viewing areas all deserve attention. A small passenger count does not by itself establish which ship will feel most comfortable to you.
Compare the travel arrangements
Check the gateway city or airport, the boarding window and any required transfers. For island cruises, match flights to the airports named in the selected itinerary. For river cruises, distinguish a round trip from a one-way route before comparing the overall cost.
Explore both collections
Browse river cruises and small-ship and expedition cruises. Compare one specific itinerary from each style and decide which daily program you would most look forward to.
